The World Refugee & Migration Council Remembers Rita Süssmuth

Rita Süssmuth’s leadership as Co-Chair of the World Refugee & Migration Council was pivotal in shaping the Council’s work at a critical juncture for the global refugee system. At the Council’s Berlin meeting in November 2017, which she convened and hosted, Süssmuth helped frame discussions around some of the most difficult challenges facing refugee governance in Europe and beyond.

Under her guidance, the Council examined the factors affecting political will—particularly in Europe—to respond to refugees in ways that are both humane and sustainable. She strongly encouraged honest engagement with public anxiety and the rise of toxic anti-refugee narratives, while pushing the Council to identify credible strategies for countering them. Equally important was her insistence that European experiences, including both successes and failures, be translated into lessons with global relevance.

Drawing on her deep political experience and moral authority, Rita Süssmuth consistently grounded the Council’s work in respect for human dignity, shared responsibility, and practical reform. Her contributions left an enduring imprint on the Council’s vision and its commitment to principled, politically realistic solutions.
