The World Refugee & Migration Council is appalled by Russian barbarism in violation of international humanitarian law and human rights in Ukraine, which is causing the worst refugee crisis in modern European history. Russia has shown a total disregard for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, and its leadership must be held accountable for the crime of aggression.
Countries around the world must step up to provide a lifeline to Ukrainian refugees. Canada’s response should include receiving a million or more Ukrainian refugees — above and beyond its commitments to other refugees, including from Afghanistan.
Last year, thousands of Afghans at risk escaped Kabul after it fell to the Taliban. Far too many remain in Afghanistan, facing ever bleaker prospects.
