IKEA Foundation donation supports actions and networks needed to transform the global response to forced displacement

The World Refugee & Migration Council (WRMC) today welcomed a generous donation from the IKEA Foundation to support delivery of the Council’s ambitious programme for implementing the concrete recommendations laid out in A Call to Action: Transforming the Global Refugee System.

The donation provides key operational resources to support research-driven initiatives on strengthening political will, innovative financing, responsibility sharing and developing the networks needed to assist vulnerable refugees and other displaced persons amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This important contribution from one of the globe’s leading foundations enables the Council, in partnership with Cuso International, to secure a core financial base in advancing the cause of refugees and displaced persons throughout the world,” said WRMC Chair Lloyd Axworthy.

The donation comes as the WRMC redoubles its efforts in response to increasing evidence of failures in the international response to the forcibly displaced. Recent reports of asylum seekers being rebuffed and limited support for refugees who are especially vulnerable during the global health crisis, have made it clear that a continued crisis of political leadership is blocking durable solutions.

Per Heggenes, IKEA Foundation chief executive officer, contributed throughout the development of the WRMC’s — originally the World Refugee Council — action plan as a Council member.

“We are most grateful for the IKEA Foundation’s generous donation, which will be used to support the core operations of the WRMC as it moves forward with its programming over the next several years,” said Fen Hampson, WRMC president.
