It is our collective duty to speak out against intolerance and hostility, advocating instead for harmony and cultural affinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2006, I had the privilege of launching the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070629174412\/http:\/\/coexistenceofcivilizations.org\/english\/travelUK.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Co-existence Expedition<\/a>\u201d with the Copenhagen-based think tank Monday Morning, alongside world leaders, experts and politicians, to identify and prioritise the main challenges threatening global efforts at coexistence. The five key challenges were empowering the powerless, ensuring freedom of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/topics\/religion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">religion<\/a>, creating public spaces for coexistence, ensuring judicial independence, and overcoming the agenda of securitisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, these challenges remain greater than ever. Instead of moving forward with our agenda of coexistence, the global rhetoric of \u201cus\u201d versus \u201cthem\u201d has intensified, narrowing the already limited space of understanding that exists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council of Europe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rm.coe.int\/factsheet-on-freedom-of-expression-and-freedom-of-religion-15september\/1680748443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasises<\/a>&nbsp;that criticism and expression of opinion must \u201cnot amount to incitement to religious hatred\u201d, and that those who exercise their freedom of expression have a duty and responsibility \u201cto avoid as far as possible expressions that are gratuitously offensive to others and which do not contribute to any form of public debate\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partners in humanity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In essence, we must revive the concept of \u201cresponsibility of expression\u201d. Hateful acts towards religious groups are propagated by those who perceive a profound ignorance in the other, and are caught in cycles of mutual blame and finger-pointing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is needed, then, is a people-centred approach based on \u201cinclusive peer-to-peer learning on faith and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/topics\/human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human rights<\/a>\u201d, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/minorities\/combating-intolerance-against-persons-based-religion-or-belief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underlined<\/a>&nbsp;by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Instead of fearing the \u201cOther\u201d, we must become partners in humanity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us return our focus to the potential of inter-religious dialogue and collaboration as a foreign policy tool for peace-building at the local, regional and international levels. If facilitated by a civilised and respectful framework for disagreement, intra- and inter-faith dialogue can be the catalyst for a new international humanitarian order. To achieve this, governments, religious leaders and civil society must harmonise and coordinate their policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fixation with policies based on \u201canti\u201d this and \u201canti\u201d that takes us further away from safety and closer to suspicion, fear, and ultimately hatred towards the \u201cOther\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paradoxically, this stands in direct opposition to the genuine security interests at the heart of every nation. We must, therefore, embrace cultural complexity, and aim for cohesion rather than exclusion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In solidarity, the expedition towards coexistence is within
