{"id":6046,"date":"2021-06-04T00:49:17","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T04:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wrmcouncil.org\/?p=6046"},"modified":"2022-04-19T16:00:52","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T20:00:52","slug":"new-blue-ribbon-task-force-regional-response-key-to-addressing-migration-in-north-and-central-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wrmcouncil.org\/fr\/migration-task-force\/new-blue-ribbon-task-force-regional-response-key-to-addressing-migration-in-north-and-central-america\/","title":{"rendered":"New Task Force: Regional Response Key to Addressing Migration in North and Central America"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Visits to Central America from US Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken demonstrate the importance of the issues, but the United States should not act alone.<\/li><li>Canada, Mexico and the United States have a timely opportunity to place regional migration and displacement at the top of their agenda and include stakeholders from Central America in the discussions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4 June 2021<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 A new high-level task force launched today brings together&nbsp;civil society, business leaders, academic researchers and former policymakers to push for collective, regional responses to the longer-term economic security and governance issues that impel migrants and asylum seekers to leave their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an inaugural statement, members of the North and Central American Task Force on Migration outline a new approach to the issues that must be addressed collectively by Western Hemisphere neighbors from Canada to Central America. It looks to move beyond meetings of political leaders while opening clear channels of communication with government officials and regional and international institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is time for a comprehensive, unified regional effort to address the major issue of refugees and migrants in the Americas,\u201d the statement says. \u201cNo country is immune or unaffected by the large movements of people fleeing violence, corruption, poverty, criminality and the effects of climate change that impel thousands of people to seek protection in other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The task force is co-chaired by&nbsp;<strong>Madeleine Albright<\/strong>, former U.S. Secretary of State;&nbsp;<strong>Lloyd Axworthy<\/strong>,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Chair, World Refugee &amp; Migration Council and former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs;&nbsp;<strong>Mayu Brizuela de Avila<\/strong>, former Salvadoran Minister of Foreign Affairs;&nbsp;<strong>Laura Chinchilla<\/strong>, former President of Costa Rica;&nbsp;<strong>Silvia Giorguli Saucedo<\/strong>, President of El Colegio de M\u00e9xico; and&nbsp;<strong>Cardinal \u00c1lvaro Ramazzini<\/strong>, Bishop of Huehuetenango<strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong>Guatemala.
