{"id":5106,"date":"2020-12-01T18:00:49","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T23:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wrmcouncil.org\/?p=5106"},"modified":"2021-11-08T12:06:51","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T17:06:51","slug":"letter-to-the-un-secretary-general-on-the-situation-in-ethiopia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wrmcouncil.org\/fr\/news\/letter-news\/letter-to-the-un-secretary-general-on-the-situation-in-ethiopia\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter to the UN Secretary-General on the Situation in Ethiopia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>World Refugee &amp; Migration Council members and others call on the UN Secretary-General to convene an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His Excellency Secretary-General of the United Nations Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear Secretary-General,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We the undersigned appeal to you to convene an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council pursuant to Article 99 of the Charter of the United Nations to address the dangerous and worsening situation on the ground in Ethiopia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evolving situation both poses a humanitarian challenge and risks becoming a serious threat to international peace and security with the prospect that Ethiopia\u2019s neighbors may be drawn into the conflict.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has noted,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cConcerns are growing for the safety of civilians inside the Tigray region of Ethiopia, particularly in and around the capital Mekelle that is home to 500,000 people. There are reports of basic services coming to a halt while the security situation continues to deteriorate. It is feared the numbers of those internally displaced inside Tigray by the fighting as well as to other regions of Ethiopia is growing daily.
