We echo their call to immediately end the use of provincial jails for immigration detention and to ultimately end the practice of immigration detention in Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Download Open Letter:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/wrmcouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Open-letter-Hassan-inquest-English69.pdf\">Coroner\u2019s inquest into the death of Abdurahman Hassan and renewed request to stop the use of provincial jails for immigration detention<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>T\u00e9l\u00e9charger la lettre ouverte:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/wrmcouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Open-letter-Hassan-inquestFR15.pdf\">Enqu\u00eate du coroner sur le d\u00e9c\u00e8s\u00a0d\u2019Abdurahman\u00a0Hassan et relance de notre appel \u00e0\u00a0mettre fin \u00e0 l\u2019utilisation des prisons provinciales pour des d\u00e9tentions li\u00e9es \u00e0\u00a0l\u2019immigration<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As you know, Canada\u2019s immigration detention system is deadly; at least 17 people have died in immigration detention since 2000, including most recently on December 25, 2022. The enclosed letter draws attention to the coroner\u2019s inquest into the 2015 death of Abdurahman Hassan, which concluded in February 2023. The inquest highlighted the disturbing conditions that Mr. Hassan endured before his death, including solitary confinement and indefinite detention. As the purpose of the inquest is to prevent similar deaths from taking place in the future, it is significant that the jury\u2019s first recommendation was that the Government of Canada \u201cseek and allocate resources to develop and implement a plan to end the practice of housing immigration detainees in provincial correctional facilities in Ontario\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This recommendation, and the calls from the organizations in the enclosed letter, cannot be left unaddressed any longer. We cannot allow unjustified fears about public security to override our respect for human rights.
